Nestling alongside the River Torridge lays Bideford; a thriving market town and port that has been welcoming visitors for centuries. It is a market town, with historic Pannier Market selling both produce and crafts each Tuesday and Saturday. It also has a working port with an active fishing industry. It is believed Sir Walter Raleigh brought his first cargo of tobacco to Bideford, which resulted in the town becoming one of the largest tobacco trading centres of the period. You can still watch the ‘catch’ being brought in as you wander along the treelined quay. Bideford is the gateway to the stunning Cornish coast and during your tour here we will visit coastal highlights such as Bude, Tintagel and Boscastle, as well as North Devon’s premier town of Barnstaple where you can enjoy a traditional Devon Cream Tea. Your hotel is situated on the edge of Bideford, in its own grounds overlooking the estuary, and provides the perfect spot to relax and enjoy the scenery, as well as the ideal base from which to explore this beautiful part of the country. Things to do: Wander Bideford’s traffic-free lanes with their boutiques, quirky shops and interesting galleries. Visit the Pannier Market or head out of town to seek for bargains at Atlantic Village. Interesting facts: A ferry operates between Bideford Quay and Lundy Island, which lies about 22 miles away in the Bristol Channel. The people of Bideford are known as ‘Bidefordians’.
