Jersey is a beautiful island with a relaxed and friendly lifestyle - where clear air, clean sea and spectacular scenery set it apart from other holiday destinations. Situated on the edge of the Gulf Stream, just 14 miles off the French coast, in the sparkling waters of the Bay of St. Malo, Jersey boasts the best sunshine record in the British Isles. From broad, sandy bays to rocky cliffs, and from quiet country lanes to the bustling streets of the Island's capital, St. Helier, you'll find plenty to entertain and delight you. Jersey is packed with historic sites, fascinating museums and world-class attractions, although these can never eclipse Jersey's natural beauty. Whatever the month or the weather, Jersey is a destination that everyone will enjoy. Jersey is also the ideal place from which to visit France for the day (a passport will be required). The medieval walled port of St. Malo is a 30-minute ferry ride away and from here you could visit the impressive Mont St. Michel, or the sophisticated and elegant French town of Dinard. Jersey has world-class attractions, from Gerald Durrell's award-winning Jersey Zoo, to the German Underground Hospital, now an interactive reminder of Jersey's five-year occupation by the Germans in World War Two. St. Helier is Jersey’s capital and main shopping centre, with many streets still carrying old French titles and shop-fronts boasting the names of their island founders. The town is named after the Island’s first and most famous saint, who lived and preached in Jersey in the 8th Century. The Island's parliament is one of the oldest assemblies in the Commonwealth, which sits in the States Chamber in Royal Square. The Central Market, which opened in 1882, is full of fresh produce, meats, fish and flowers. Wander amongst the town’s streets, browsing in the numerous shops and Victorian markets, or take time out in one of the lovely pavement cafés. In Jersey you can discover tranquil countryside, mouthwatering gourmet food and glorious beaches…in fact, Jersey has a beach for every day of your holiday…! For more ideas on what to see and do around the island, pop into the visitor centre in Liberation Square, or see your island representative.
