The River Moselle winds through one of Europe’s most scenic valleys, dotted with pretty hamlets and beautiful towns. With their rich history, medieval market squares and striking cathedrals, these towns provide an idyllic setting for a wonderful Christmas Market break. Trier Christmas Market: We head to the ancient city of Trier, perched on the banks of the Moselle. Its charming Christmas Market is set in the heart of the city amid the medieval surroundings of Haupmarkt Square, with the cathedral providing an impressive backdrop. Festively-decorated wooden chalets offer a vast range of gift ideas and souvenirs from hand-crafted Christmas decorations, wooden toys and candles to hand-blown glassware and ceramics. Bernkastel-Kues & Cochem Christmas Markets: Our day begins at Bernkastel- Kues Christmas Market, held amidst the town’s narrow medieval streets, selling a range of festive delights and decorations. Bernkastel-Kues is also home to the region’s largest advent calendar situated in the heart of the Old Town. From here we journey back along the river to Cochem, home to half-timbered buildings and a fairytale castle. The Christmas Market is just as picturesque as the town itself and, thanks to the vineyards that surround Cochem, this is the perfect opportunity to try some of the loca lly-produced glühwein.
